![]() Composers have used contrasting tempi to bring forth different melodic, harmonic, and thematic ideas. ![]() ![]() We instinctively seek out music of varying tempi for different uses in our lives. The speed at which these musical thoughts progress is referred to as the tempo. ![]() The idea of one musical thought set against another will prove critical to our development of new imagery and sound shapes. This activity will ask you to create your own order of things by dividing your music into categories. Later, in this chapter, we provide an activity that will ask you to begin to assemble a collection of music for your listening. In the use of music for health, it is not important to know the theory of music, so much as to be aware that there is an order of things. Yet, the true import of harmony is to further amplify musical ideas. Some may argue that harmony need be affable and rich. It may not be correct or dulcet, but it still has harmony. That is, if your friend misses the pitch when singing her intended note, there is still harmony. Sing one note, have a friend sing another, and you have harmony. Simply stated, harmonies are the joining together of two or more pitches to create sound at the same time. Harmony adds new dimensions to the experience of a melody. Your health can be impacted by melodies in profound ways. A great melody will create new fears while holding your older fears at bay. A good melody is one which brings you new insights with every listening. Everyone can relate to a melody in his or her own way. Everyone has his or her own personal story. Our emotional reactions to a musical composition are often related to the structure of a melody. It very well could indeed be described as dark for the lyrics in the song 'To Live is to Die' are written as "When a man lies he murders, some part of the world, these are the pale deaths, which men miscall their lives, all this I cannot bear, to witness any longer, cannot the kingdom of salvation, take me home.Resource The Elements of Music Briefly Defined However it also ranges to a heavy but depressing sound. The timbre element of this music is very far off happy, it has an energetic and aggressive sound. An example of this is 'Sad But True' which has very thick guitar riffs that have been played in chunks to really amplify the texture of this song. The Texture of this music is very thick, the thickness of the music is created by the heavily distorted guitar, and the fact that they have two guitars, the chunky bass lines, the heavy and powerful drum beats and the loud and aggressive vocals. The beats from the drums are fast and exciting and the accelerated strumming of the power chords on the rhythm guitar also give it that fast tempo, a good song to use as an example of this is the song 'Master of Puppets' Most of Metallica's songs generally have a fast tempo because the genre in which Metallica is, is often characterized by it's fast tempo as well as loudness. However not every one of Metallica's songs is fast and complex, the song 'Nothing Else Matters' is a slower song with bigger spaces in between notes leaving us with a less dense rhythm. A great example of this is the song 'Damage Inc'. The rhythm of most Metallica songs are fast and complex, the reason in which the rhythm is fast is the way that the beat of the drums is fast and there is not as much spacing in between the notes, same with the rhythm guitarist in the fast and thick strumming pattern, and the reason why it's complex is because there is minor spacing in between many notes of the songs, their solos are beyond complex, they cram so many notes all into one solo so fast without a split second in between any of their notes, this causes the rhythm to be complex. Rhythm is made up from the beat of the song, the vocals and the other instruments. ![]() An example of a melody in one of Metallica's tracks is the song 'Enter Sandman' where the guitar riff that is introduced at the start of the song is repeated during choruses and at the beginning of verses. They create their melodies in their guitar riffs that are frequently repeated throughout the song. For example there is a harmony at the start of Metallica's song 'Nothing Else Matters' for Kirk is playing two different notes at the same time and creating a harmony.Īlmost every single one of Metallica's tracks have a melody. Harmonies in Metallica's tracks are created by the different notes being played at the same time. The sound in most tracks generally change, an example of changing dynamics is the song 'Fade to Black' where the song starts off reasonably quiet during the introduction and then gets louder throughout the song. The dynamics of Metallica's music are generally loud, this is because of the genre of Metallica is heavy metal, and heavy metal is best described as loud. ![]()
